AIA Huron Valley is pleased to host a tour of the recently completed State Theater and the historic Michigan Theater in downtown Ann Arbor. Patrick Roach of Quinn Evans Architects and Russ Collins, Executive Director & CEO of the Michigan Theater will host this tour.

Location: Start in the State Theater second floor lobby at 11am

Parking: In nearby parking garages or on-street metered parking

PPE and Other Gear Required: No special gear required

Continuing Education: This tour will be accredited for 1.25 LU/HSW continuing education credit. Course No. AIAHVCE0101

Learning Objectives:

    • Discuss the historic preservation aspects of the recent State Theater renovation – concession lobby, recreation of the historic carpet, exterior marquis and exterior lighting, exterior design surfaces and addition of the new entry
    • Discuss the variety of individual movie theaters within the State Theater and Michigan Theater and the variety of experiences in the different venues
    • Discuss the design considerations for today’s movie theaters in comparison to the original historic Michigan Theater. 
      • Wall surfaces including sound absorbent surfaces vs. reflective hard surfaces
      • Seating concerns for best viewing
      • Seating concerns for best sound
      • Discuss the size of the projection screen and the impact of that on the planning of the theater
      • Discuss lighting considerations
    • Discuss handicapped accessibility considerations, especially as it relates to the remodeling of the State Theater
    • Introduce “behind the scenes” opportunities to hear the Michigan Theater organ, see the stage behind the curtain, and a projection booth.
