Benefits of Daylight and Fresh Air in Residential Design (AIA/CES Registered)

Lengths: Course 298 - 1 hour

Credits: 1 LU/HSW

Description: A comprehensive, educational program to communicate how skylights can contribute and provide the benefits of natural ventilation, daylight and energy efficiency to ensure good health and wellbeing in residential applications as well as evaluating the importance of indoor climate and the aspects of creating better living conditions.

Learning Objectives:

 - Fresh Air: Participants will understand the strategic placement of roof windows and skylights to optimize natural ventilation and create a healthy indoor climate. We will discuss how fresh air skylights help contribute to healthy indoor air quality in residential homes. The information learned within this section will help the designer to understand how venting skylights can benefit sustainable living in buildings.

 - Daylighting: Participants will be familiar with understanding the benefits of skylights in residential designs. This section will cover significant research and case studies that prove skylights provide twice as much light as vertical windows with better quality and balance of light.

 - Energy Balance: Participants will learn how skylights can help contribute to an energy efficient home design where a better daylight factor is achieved while reducing the overall fenestration area. This section will outline a number of examples and show how skylights can help create a better daylight factor while reducing annual heating and cooling cost.

 - Thermal Comfort: Through this section, we will review the thermal comfort parameters that help to evaluate and measure a pleasant environment. The designers will learn how skylights and roof windows can influence certain parameters and create positive, healthy indoor climate.
