    Lessons from Tubingen, Germany

    June 27, 2013 AADL Multipurpose Room 7pm

Note: This is a rescheduled date due to a mechanical failure at AADL on the original April 25th presentation date

Last summer a delegation of architects, urban planners, and interested citizens visited Tubingen Germany to learn about “Architecture and Sustainable Urban Development,” in a trip co-sponsored by Huron Valley AIA and the Tubingen-Ann Arbor Sister City Partnership.  Tubingen, a college town built along the river Neckar, has many similarities to Ann Arbor.  Although they operate under different regulations, their achievements gave participants ideas of goals to strive for in their own planning efforts. Concepts noted included a well-defined and protected historic core complete with a pedestrian zone; sustainability requirements including green roofs and solar collection panels;  the adaptive reuse and infill housing  of the building cooperatives.   Side trips to Stuttgart and the Swabian Alps were also instructive as well a fun.   Come see a power point of trip highlights presented by some of the participants including: Anne Cox, Celeste Novak, Janis Bobrin, and Grace Shackman.

Attendees can earn 1 LU learning unit.

    PRACT 203: Deep Energy Retrofits

    GBCI Course ID 90008206

    July 25th  11:30-1:30 pm

A3C UrbEn Retreat, 210 E. Huron, Ann Arbor

New commercial construction is in the doldrums.  Instead of constructing new buildings, many real estate professionals see improving and repositioning existing buildings as an opportunity to create value for an organization.  How can these professionals maximize building investment and value beyond obvious and simple efficiency improvements with minimal added capital expenditure? By digging deeper with energy retrofits.

Experts from New Buildings Institute, Glenborough Properties, and Rocky Mountain Institute will share real project data, strategies, lessons, business rationale and financial information uncovered in their research and buildings.   Hear how investors and owner-occupants successfully implemented deep energy investments in existing buildings, while achieving big energy savings (50 percent!) and increasing the value of their buildings.
